- The canvas A Redenção de Camʺ (Redemption of Cham), dated in 1895, is one of the best-known works of Modesto Brocos y Gómez and ia a pictographic representation of the 19th century scientific "whitening" thesis of the first Brazilian Republic (República Velha), that argued that in three generations, Brazil would be a white country. Author Tatiana Lotierzo articulates the complex and distinct axes of race, gender, generation, civilization, science and religion, composing a paradigmatic synthesis of a moment when Brazil intended to become Republican, modern but carried along a historical heritage that was (and at times still is) insurmountable.ʺ (HKB Translation)--Verso Cover.
