Summary:

A marbled paper covered volume containing the commonplace book of Mrs. A. L. Bishop probably of Surrey, England dated 1830. The volume contains aphorisms, excerpts, maxims, meditations, quotations, and verse regarding, aging, death, gardens, happiness, life, morals, religion, and virtue. Authors of some excerpts include Honoré de Balzac, Lord Byron, Henry Fielding, Samuel Johnson, Alexander Pope, Samuel Jackson Pratt, Richard Sibbes, and Issac Watts. Some excerpts contributed to the volume were signed by N. Bishop. The volume contains 121 numbered pages. Preceding page 1 are three pages of maxims signed at the bottom: July 16, 1830, Mrs. A. L. Bishop's book. A table of contents is at the end of the volume on pages A to F. The title of the volume is from a label affixed to the front cover. There is a drawing of Mrs. Ditton pasted on the verso of the first fly leaf. Prints are pasted on the inside front and back covers and on the flyleaves. Clippings of some of Richard Sibbes meditations have been pasted in the volume.
