- Peter Brook has been a towering figure in world theatre in the second half of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first. He was born in 1925, the son of Jewish emigrées from Latvia and, as he found out later, cousin of the Russian theatre director, Valentin Pluchek. He went to Westminster School and Oxford University where he directed an admired production of Marlowe's Doctor Faustus.
