- Summary:
- "This monograph summarizes the results of research into the mutual interactions of Indo-European populations with their neighbours speaking non-Indo-European languages in Central Asia and China. It covers the time span from the expected arrival of the first Indo-Europeans in the Tarim Basin, which is usually connected with the appearance of so-called Tarim mummies from around 2000 BC, to the 13th century CE, when the first Europeans travelled to China. The main part of the monograph is devoted to analyses of contacts between Tocharian and other Central Asian Indo-European languages (Middle Iranian epigraphic and literary languages such as Bactrian, the Saka languages from Khotan and Tumshuq, Sogdian, Parthian; further Kroraina Prakrit and Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit) on the one hand and non-Indo-European languages (Old & Middle Chinese; various Old Turkic dialects) on the other hand"--Back cover.
