Summary:

A green leatherbound volume comprising culinary recipes and accounts for girl's education at a school in Nocton, Lincolnshire, England, spanning the years from 1805 to 1825. The volume was presumably written by Eleanor Agnes Hobart Countess of Buckinghamshire (Pickering & Chatto). The first part of the volume is comprised of culinary recipes, some with attributions and dates. The recipes include biscuits, cakes, cheeses, creams, egg dishes, fish dishes, meat dishes, potato dishes, puddings, sauces, and souffles. Some recipes with attributions include blancmange by Lady B.; fricassee chicken, omelette by Rose; cream biscuits by Lady Grantham; and fish sauce by Miss Burman. Following the recipes and some blank leaves is a brief alphabetical index. Reading the volume from back to front is a "Schooling account" for six girls spanning the years from 1805 to 1813. The girls were attending a school run by John Brackenbury in Nocton. Recorded in the volume are the girls' names, ages, attendance at school and church, course of study, and length of education. Expenses were recorded for books, including Bibles, prayer books, and primers; clothing, and school supplies. The school founded in 1793 seems to have been run by John Brackenbury of Lincolnshire and later his daughter Justina.
