Biography/History:

An Armenian, Turkish artist who lived in İzmir. Tatikian began painting in the 1840s. He was a printer and painter who sold individual works of people living in the Ottoman Empire including the Smyrna region (now İzmir).

Summary:

A album consisting of 23 plates and 1 photograph created by artist Bogos Tatikian between 1840 and 1850. The title stamped in gold on the cover, Levant, refers to a large geographic area of the Eastern Mediterranean. The plates are pasted in the volume. They consist of lithographs and watercolors of ordinary people in traditional costumes. The people are from in and around the Ottoman Empire. Only a few lithographs have captions in either French or Italian. They include depictions of a Turkish peasant woman from Smyrna, a Turkish woman, a water bearer, and a hot drink vendor. There are 17 watercolors, 6 lithographs, and 1 photograph. One lithograph has the date of 1840. Three lithographs are detached. The photograph is probably mausoleums located at the Temple of the Mamluks in Cairo, Egypt.
