Applied Linguistics as Social Science surveys the increasingly important dialogue between linguists and social theorists. The book shows how social theory, applied linguistics and sociolinguistics share common concerns, arguing that a social scientific account of applied linguistics is needed to explain the interaction between social structures, human agents and language. Beginning with an accessible account of key issues in both social theory and applied linguistics, the book draws on contemporary social theory to contextualise language as a social practice. It argues that the social world comprises the activities and interactions of individuals combined with the structural relationships that arise from these activities and interactions, and explores the significance of this for applied linguistics. This perspective enables a fresh and detailed discussion of topics such as language learning, literacy teaching, intercultural communication, English as an international language, and ethnicity and language choice. Written by an applied linguist and a sociologist, the book draws out the implications for social research of viewing language as a social practice, and in so doing presents a persuasive case for regarding applied linguistics as social science.
