Summary:
Architect Jan Kuijt Wzn. grew up in an environment of retailers and received his first assignments from that sector, from then-known entrepreneurs such as Ter Meulen, Wyers, Witteveen and Zumpolle. In the 1920s, Vroom & Dreesmann would produce a steady stream of work. Kuijt proved to be able to give their department stores a recognizable face in terms of architecture. He thereby made optimum use of the eye-catching urban locations that the group had acquired early on for an earlier generation of (smaller) stores. Kuijt has designed well-known locations of Vroom & Dreesmann in Amsterdam, Haarlem, The Hague, Hilversum, Utrecht, Amersfoort and Enschede.
