- Summary:
- "The Mercantile Library is pleased to present Pottery Native American Utilitarian Vessels. This exhibition is presented to show residents of Greater Cincinnati and the surrounding region ceramic vessels created by the Native American inhabitants of the alluvial grounds of what we now call the Ohio, Missouri, and Mississippi River basins and tributaries, and to teach them about these cultures. The Mercantile Library presents this exhibition in conjunction with the UNESCO World Heritage Inscription for Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks. The Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks include seven monumental Native American earthwork complexes in Ohio's Warren, Licking, and Ross Counties: the Ohio History Connection's Fort Ancient Earthworks and Newark Earthworks, and five earthworks within the National Park Service's Hopewell Culture National Historical Park. These earthworks were built around 2000 years ago and are believed to have served as ceremonial centers for sacred rituals and gatherings of peoples and societies scattered across half of the North American continent, from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. They are the largest, most elaborate, and best preserved examples of hundreds of earthworks built by Native Americans. This exhibit, the second the Mercantile Library has hosted to increase area residents' awareness of the Ohio History Connection's efforts to have these Hopewell sites designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites, opened May 2, 2017."--Page 1.
