- Summary:
- A commonplace book created by an unknown compiler in England spanning the years from 1840 to 1845. Extract & memoranda, 1840 is written on the first leaf. The volume comprises extracts concerning travel to Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe, religion, England, and some political speeches. Excerpts from works regarding travel include Scenes and characteristics of Hindostan with passages on Allahabad; The highlands of Ethiopia by William Cornwallis Harris; America by James Silk Buckingham; The Chinese by Sir John Francis Davis; and several works regarding India. There are several passage from religious works including long excerpts by Dr. Thomas Arnold. Twenty-seven pages are from The public and private life of Lord Chancellor Eldon by Horace Twiss. There are excerpts from works regarding the history of England and portions of contemporary 19th century political speeches. A clipping from the Morning herald dated October 1841 concerning the state of the current weather is pasted in the volume.
