This slim book's staple-bind format conceals important content for anyone interested in geology or the history of science. It is the first-ever translation into English of one of the most famous science books in Russian history, Mikhail Vasil'evich Lomonosov's On the Strata of the Earth. In Russia, the author is an Enlightenment giant, but he has been little known elsewhere because of the language barrier. James Hutton is usually given credit for creating the modern science of geology, and for writing the first systematic book on the history of the earth. Published in 1763, Lomonosov's book came twenty-five years earlier. The author travels the world's surface with a curious mind and tireless energy, seeking to understand how the earth was formed and its history; what he can see is his only guide. Some of his conclusions are similar to Hutton's, others are different, some match modern ideas and some do not. The translation is a collaboration between native English speaker Stephen M. Rowland and native Russian speaker Slava Korolev, both geologists at the University of Nevada. It is clear, direct, easy to read, and has a distinctive voice. The translators have wisely chosen to avoid fake anachronisms, and it is a pleasure to meet the author in English. He is a very good guide for beginning geology students, along with a modern text to see what we've learned since then and how. Vital for the history of science, highly recommended for teachers and students of the earth sciences, and good for interested adult readers.
