Calvin's Praelectiones in librum prophetiarum Jeremiae are among the last works pronounced by the great reformer. The present critical edition elucidates quotations and allusions to numerous ancient, mediaeval or contemporary interpreters. The text is also compared to that of the corresponding Sermons, given in French. Each verse is quoted then accompanied by a commentary of variable length, according to the theological positions of the author: defence of the Sola Scriptura and rejection of allegory, anti-catholic attacks, with ironical tones recalling those of the polemical works. The wealth of these commentaries can be explored from a fourfold point of view. Firstly that of the rhetoric: an argumentation for the prophetic word of Jeremiah, with whom Calvin identified himself. Secondly that of philology: extreme attention to the letter, although Calvin was not a confirmed Hebraist. Thirdly, that of History with a notable interest for the biblical realia. Lastly, that of the "biblical style", which contrasts the principles of copia (anaphors, synonymy) and of brevitas (epiphonems).

Professées en latin entre 1559 et 1563 à l'Auditoire de Genève, les Praelectiones in librum prophetiarum Jeremiaem sont l'œuvre de la fin de la vie de Calvin. Sténographié sur place, dédicacé à l'Electeur Palatin, l'ouvrage est publié en septembre 1563 par Jean Crespin, accompagné des Lamentationes (non reprises ici). Au XVIe s., il n'a connu que trois éditions et une traduction en français en 1565, puis n'a été repris que dans des éditions collectives à partir du XVIIe s. Calvin donne ses leçons selon le principe de la lectio continua : chaque verset est cité (souvent déjà glosé) en latin, puis accompagné d'un commentaire de longueur variable. La richesse de ces commentaires peut s'explorer d'un quadruple point de vue : d'abord, celui de la rhétorique: il s'agit d'une argumentation pour la parole prophétique de Jérémie auquel l'auteur s'identifie, explicitement ou non. Celui de la philologie (extrême attention à la lettre du texte bien que Calvin ne soit pas un hébraïsant confirmé). Celui de l'histoire avec un intérêt marqué pour les realia bibliques. Celui enfin du "style biblique", qui met en tension les principes de la copia (anaphores, synonymie) et de la brevitas (épiphonèmes). La présente édition élucide les citations et allusions aux nombreux interpretes antiques, médiévaux ou contemporains de Calvin, ainsi qu'à la Bible. Le texte des Prælectiones est encore comparé à celui des sermons sur Jérémie, donnés en français. Un index et la publication de l'édition française de 1565, disponible en POD et sur le site Calvin et Genève 16, sont des outils qui facilitent la consultation.
