- Above all, Bèze's correspondence is an anthology of historic documents from the end of the 16th century. However, one also finds theology; the previous volume included a little treatise on justification written to Doctor Crato, and in this volume his friends' reactions to this treatise (Crato himself, Morau) illustrate the difference between theology and the care of the soul. Also in 1585 the League erupts in France: "would the king know how to resist the rebels," asks Bèze. Later he explains how the king gave into them, sacrificing the edict of religion, and prohibiting all Protestantism in France. Soon the people in the Midi also rebel in the "Guerre des trois Henri". Bèze's pessimism mounts: everywhere are signs of a general papist conspiracy, organised by Jesuits, who carry on ruthlessly even in Switzerland. It is under their influence that a print shop is set up in Fribourg, which immediately publishes a blistering attack of the reformation, written by Father Jean Hay. Bèze prepares a reply.
- La Correspondance de Bèze est avant-tout un recueil de documents historiques sur la fin de XVIe siècle. Mais on y trouve aussi de la théologie, comme ce petit traité de la Justification destiné au médecin Crato dans le tome précedent, et ici les réactions des amis (Crato lui-même, Morau) à ce traité où l'on touche du doigt la différence entre la théologie et la cure d'âme. Au reste l'année 1585 est celle où la Ligue se déchaîne en France : le roi saura-t-il résister à ces rebelles ? se dit Bèze. Et de constater qu'hélas non : il leur cède tout. Il leur sacrifie l'édit de religion, en interdisant purement et simplement tout protestantisme en France. Le Midi aussitôt se rebelle et c'est la "Guerre des trois Henri". Le pessimisme l'emporte : la conjuration générale des papistes apparaissant partout, organisée par les jésuites, qui sévissent même en Suisse: c'est sous leur influence que s'installe une imprimerie à Fribourg, dont le premier livre sera un brûlot anti-réformé, les "Œuvres" du Père Jean Hay auxquelles Bèze prépare une réponse.
