A native of Senlis and a refugee to Geneva beginning in 1561, Simon Goulart (1543-1628) was one of the most prolific polygraphs of his time. Translator of Plutarch, editor of Montaigne, adaptor of the chansons of Orlande de Lassus, commentator of Du Bartas, author of "histoires extraordinaires," lyric and satiric poet, and even dramaturge, he was a "ferryman" between the German and French Reformations. At the crossroads of several disciples, combining philosophy, theology, morality, music, astrology, demonology, and alchemy, his encyclopedic oeuvre which summarizes the preoccupations of the late Renaissance orients Calvinism toward a less austere, more "literary" and humanistic sensibility. Successor of Calvin and Bèze at the head of the Compagnie des Pasteurs, he got involved in the political movements of his time, which he analyzed shrewdly as a historian of the wars of religion. The studies collected here explore for the first time the complexity of an oeuvre whose "intérêts vastes comme le monde" concerned an informed and curious public.

Né à Senlis, réfugié à Genève dès 1561, Simon Goulart (1543-1628) est un des écrivains « polygraphes » les plus féconds de son époque. Traducteur de Plutarque, éditeur de Montaigne, adaptateur des chansons d'Orlande de Lassus, commentateur de Du Bartas, auteur d'« histoires extraordinaires », poète lyrique et satirique voire dramaturge, il fut un « passeur » entre les Réformes d'expression allemande et française. Au carrefour de plusieurs disciplines, mêlant philosophie, théologie, morale, musique, astrologie, démonologie et alchimie, son oeuvre encyclopédique qui résume les préoccupations de la Renaissance tardive oriente le calvinisme vers une sensibilité moins austère, plus « littéraire » et humaniste. Successeur de Calvin et de Bèze à la tête de la Compagnie des Pasteurs il s'engagea dans l'action politique de son temps qu'il a analysée avec sagacité en tant qu'historien des guerres de religion. Les études réunies ici explorent pour la première fois la complexité d'une œuvre dont les « intérêts vastes comme le monde » concernent un public averti aussi bien que curieux.
