L'année 1595 n'a pas été facile à vivre : pour Bèze, à qui le grand âge impose retraite et maux à soigner, pour Genève, qui n'est plus en guerre mais n'est pas encore en paix : la cité connaît un régime de trêves qu'il faut renouveler tous les trois mois, avec le risque que l'ennemi réussisse un coup de main inattendu, et pour la France, où les protestants ont tendance à se plaindre du roi nouvellement converti, qui les oublie et néglige... On voit Bèze dans le rôle politique que Henri IV lui a confié : apaiser les humeurs des huguenots. Il met aussi son point d'honneur à décourager les « moyenneurs » (ceux qui, à la suite du roi, voudraient réconcilier catholiques et protestants, au risque d'ébranler la bonne doctrine). Il faut enfin canaliser l'ardeur de certains jeunes théologiens qui veulent, tels Raphaël Egli, lancer de nouvelles explications de la justification. Un ensemble de documents historiques nouveaux et variés.

The year 1595 was a difficult one: for Bèze, on whom old age imposed retirement and illness; for Geneva, no longer at war but not yet at peace: the city was involved in a system of truces needing to be renewed every three months, with the risk that the enemy might strike an unexpected blow; and for France, where Protestants were complaining about their newly converted king...We see Bèze in the political role that Henry IV entrusted to him: appeasing the moods of the Huguenots. He also made it a point of honor to discourage "moyenneurs" (those who, following the king, hoped to reconcile Catholics and Protestants, at the risk of destroying the integrity of Protestant doctrine) and needed to channel the ardor of certain young theologians such as Raphaël Egli who wanted to launch new explanations of justification.
