- Summary:
- The critical edition of Calvin's sermons on Christ's birth, passion, resurrection and ascension, Pentecost, and the second coming of Christ, is the first volume in the Calvini Opera Recognita, series V, Sermones. In Geneva it was Denis Raguenier's task to record Calvin's sermons. Conrad Badius made a selection of sermons and edited them as Plusieurs sermons de Jean Calvin. The sermons on the Ascension and on Pentecost originally belonged to the series of sermons on the Acts of the Apostles (edited in 1994 by Willem Balke and Wim Moehn as volume VIII of the Supplementa Calviniana). The sermons are annotated in order to make them accessible to modern readers. The text of the first edition of 1558 is compared with the subsequent editions of 1559 and 1563. The unique copy of the 1559 edition was discovered in the Bibliothèque Publique et Universitaire of Neuchâtel in 2007. The introduction by Wim Moehn puts the sermons in their liturgical and historical context.
