- "Circular aquatint printed in manganese-brown on thin wove paper from a copperplate produced for the transfer decoration of earthenware pottery (171 mm.; trimmed to the subject) ... Fanciful Romantic conception of the American Revolutionary War hero, the Marquis de Lafayette, mourning Benjamin Franklin, founding father and American ambassador to France. Nature, in the form of outsized flowers and verdure, frame the scene. The nobleman, seated before the tomb, is lost in contemplation, his book abandoned. In the distance, sunrise illuminates a ship and temple, representing commerce and religion."--Bookseller's description.
