Summary:
This is the first comprehensive catalogue of AWN Pugin's architectural works. It identifies, with varying degrees of certainty, 295 executed works and at least 84 unexecuted designs spread over seven countries and two continents. These works are divided into eleven categories, each prefaced with an introduction. The individual entries comprise brief architectural descriptions, followed by information pertaining to benefaction/commissioning and subsequent history, and conclude with a list of sources. In addition, there are six Appendices containing background information and a useful summary of the catalogue in the form of a gazetteer, arranged both by diocese and county. Pugin's architectural output was both ecclesiastical and secular, the former mainly the Catholic Church, which he joined in 1835 at the age of 23. Many of his secular works were commissioned by members of the nobility and landed gentry, the most important being John Talbot, the 16th Earl of Shrewsbury, whose patronage Pugin enjoyed from 1838 onwards.
