Biography/History:

Townshend was the second born son to Marquess George Townshend and Charlotte Ellerker of East Rayham, Norfolk, England. Townshend held the seat of Tamworth in the British House of Parliament from 1812 to 1818 and from 1820 to 1834. He lived at Rayman Hall and 20 Cavendish Square in London. Townshend married his cousin Charlotte Elizabeth Loftus in 1812. They had no children.

Summary:

A volume containing the inventory of one of Lord and Lady Charles Townshend's homes either Cavendish Square or Raynham Hill. The inventory spans the years from 1829 to 1834. The items described in the volume are arranged by room including anteroom, bedrooms, dining room, drawing room, closets, dressing rooms, entrance halls, and study. Inventoried items include china, furniture, draperies, and architectural elements of each room. Reading the volume from back to front are inventories for linens and kitchen items. A note written in red ink preceding the linens section indicates Lady Charles looked at the items in 1833. The linens year acquired and initials such as CT and CVFT--presumably standing for Charles Townshend--are noted. The linens are dated between the years 1813 to 1830. Changes in quantity, location, and missing linens are noted. Notations regarding the servants and Lady Charles are also included. The kitchen inventory has notes concerning the condition of items and separate lists for new items added by year. The volume is ruled in pencil. Several leaves in the center of the volume are blank. Some leaves in the volume were excised.
