- Summary:
- Two volumes comprised of 235 picture postcards compiled by an unnamed person, probably from Adelaide, South Australia. The postcards represent the compiler's journey throughout British occupied India spanning the years from 1907 to 1909. Twenty-eight postcards are of European cities. A majority of the postcards have handwritten commentary and remarks on the versos creating postcard travel journal or diary. The notes on the back of the postcards are addressed to an unknown recipient with explanations of the sites and people encountered. The postcards are images of animals, architecture, daily life, historical sites, landscapes, people at work, temples, and transportation. Some of the handwritten descriptions discuss people at work such as barbers and cotton cleaners; events such as a missionary wedding and flooding in Hyderabad; traveling by cart, elephant, and train; and observations on culture and women. The postcards include images of Amber, Bengal, Ceylon, Colombo, Delhi, Jaipur, Kashmir, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mussoorie, and Peshawar. The postcards of Europe include cities in England, Italy, and Switzerland. The images are chiefly in black-and-white with some in color. Three postcards were postmarked and sent to Australia. Two are addressed to A. K. Newbery dated 1907 and one is addressed to Mrs. G. W. Cooper in 1909. The original postcard albums are housed in a separate box. Stamped on cover: Pictorial postcards. Stamp on inside back cover: Made in Germany.
