Summary:
The National Transgender Library and Archive was founded by Dallas Denny, an Atlanta-based activist, writer, and organizer in the transgender community. Denny was also the founder and served as executive director of the American Educational Gender Information Service (AEGIS), a non-profit advocacy group for individuals with gender dysphoria. AEGIS distributed materials and provided referrals to physicians, attorneys, clergy, and support groups within the community. In 1998, AEGIS was folded into Gender Education and Advocacy (GEA), a Georgia-based nonprofit. The collection is comprised of six parts, all containing material relating to transgendered individuals as well as the practice of cross-dressing and the cross-dressing community. The largest subset includes periodicals discussing transgender issues and cross-dressing, as well as related clippings from popular magazines such as Esquire and Good Housekeeping. The remaining parts of the collection include conference and workshop materials; photographs and articles from AEGIS; materials associated with shopping for items related to cross-dressing; medical information pertaining to sexual reassignment, electrolysis, and breast augmentation; and Denny's extensive index of books on transgender issues. The collection also includes a small sampling of transgender ephemera.
