Summary:
Animal identification (ID) refers to marking individual or groups of farm animals so that they can be tracked from birth to slaughter. Animal ID is one segment of meat traceability, generally the tracking of identifiable products through the entire marketing chain to the ultimate consumer. Animal ID and meat traceability have been suggested as potentially useful tools in animal health, food safety, quality assurance, or country-of-origin labeling programs. Animal ID bills introduced in the 109th Congress include H.R. 1254, the National Farm Animal Identification and Records Act, H.R. 1256, to limit animal ID information disclosure, and H.R. 3170, creating a private Livestock Identification Board to oversee the program. This report will be updated if events warrant.
