Summary:
This volume explores qualitative research as a tool for institutional research. Utilizing Terenzini's definition of institutional research as systematic inquiry in the pursuit of organizational intelligence, the chapters in this volume present the argument that qualitative research can serve as a mechanism to produce technical / analytical, issues, and contextual awareness. Contributors to this volume also highlight, how difficult it may be to achieve true organizational intelligence without some use of qualitative research. While institutional researchers often employ informal qualitative methods (for example, drawing insight from their experiences and anecdotal observations) to anchor their understanding issues and context, we argue that qualitative data collection and analysis should be utilized more widely by institutional researchers. To that end this volume presents a systematic approach to qualitative research in institutional research that connects technical and analytical skills with issues awareness and knowledge of context.
