Summary:
This Anthology celebrates the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Writing Awards at Carnegie Mellon University, a poetry and prose writing contest that, since 1999, has invited Pittsburgh-area high school and college students to write honestly and creatively about race. The mission of the awards is to create a space for daring, eloquent, and inventive writing, in the belief that the process of writing itself can help explore and break down issues of difference in our lives. Their attempts take brave steps to avoid the poisonous silence that Dr. King warned against. This anthology invites you into the struggles of young people trying to make sense of the world as it is-where they encounter difference, discrimination, pride, and prejudice-in order to help all of us to imagine a better one.
