- Biography/History:
- Batsheva Dance Company, "widely recognized as one of the world’s top dance ensembles" (Galili) is based in Tel Aviv, Israel. It was founded in 1964 with the financial backing of Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild and the artistic direction of Martha Graham. The company traveled throughout the world and during the first several decades, and it was known as "an Israeli group performing primarily American repertory with unbridled verve and vigor." (Gailili) In 1990, Ohad Naharin, a dancer who had performed with Batsheva, was appointed as artistic director. His own choreography became the standard along with house choreographer Sharon Eyal; although he frequently invited internationally renowned choreographers including William Forsythe, Kylian, and Angelin Preljocaj and Israeli choreographers including Anat Danieli, Itzik Galili, and Inbal Pinto, to work with the company.
- Summary:
- This collection consists of black and white photographs of twelve performances by the Batsheva Dance Company. The photographs are arranged alphabetically by performance; and on the back side of at least one photograph in each set, information identifying the performance, the choreographer, and the composer of the music is included in English. Less consistently, this same information is included in Hebrew. Usually, but not always, information identifying the set designer, the person responsible for lighting, the costume designer, and the featured performers are included. The date of the performance is never included; however, all are within copyright and almost every photograph is stamped with the photographers names.
