- Summary:
- A military leader named Iki Tadashi was captured by the Soviets during WWII. Treated as a war criminal, he was sentenced to many years of labor in a harsh Siberia detention camp. After 11 years of imprisonment, he is released. He returns to Japan and begins adjusting to life as a civilian, rejecting an offer from his former colleague to work on a defense project. Tadashi has decided to never involve himself in war again, much to the joy of his family. Instead, he attempts to set off on a new path working at a major trading company.
- 主人公の壹岐正（いきただし）は陸軍中佐で大本営参謀。終戦の詔に対し、参謀総長の命令書が出されていない以上武装解除に応じる必要がないと解する関東軍部隊の説得に努めた。日ソ中立条約を犯して侵攻してきたソ連軍に拘置され、重労働25年の刑を宣告されシベリアに送られる。そこで11年の抑留生活をおくることになる。帰国後参謀としての経歴を買われ商社の近畿商事[4]に入社し航空自衛隊の次期戦闘機選定争いの仕事で辣腕を振るうことになる。後半部では日米の自動車会社の提携、中東（イラン）での石油発掘プロジェクトにも携わっていく。イラン・サルベスタン鉱区での石油発掘に成功した壱岐は、近畿商事社長の大門に勇退を進言し、みずからも近畿商事を辞めてしまう。そして、壹岐は第三の人生として、長期シベリア抑留者の親睦団体である朔風会（さくふうかい）の会長となり、シベリアへ現地で死んだ日本人の墓参りと遺骨の収集に行く。
- 《不毛地帶》原本是大本营的参谋 - 壹岐正，在酷寒的极地西伯利亚的收容所中，忍耐著11年的拷问和饥饿与强制的劳动工作，终于在昭和31年12月回到国内。祈求第二个人生不要犯下错误的他，回应了近畿商事的社长大门的再三邀请，而决心成为一个商业人。当时在西伯利亚宛如地狱般滞留的生活的伤口还没恢复好，他又再度投入了叫做商场的炽烈的战争中。
