Summary:
Young-Ae Chon, a professor at the University of Seoul, is one of the most prominent Germanists in her homeland. She has published numerous studies on German literature, has submitted a number of translations of German poetry into Korean and has also made a name for herself as a poet. In 2011, she received the Goethe-Gesellschaft's highest honor in Weimar, the Golden Goethe Medal, for her services in conveying German and Far Eastern culture. Her essays on Goethe's "West-Eastern Divan," which she herself translated into Korean, are a reflection of her profound knowledge as well as her sensitivity to poetic texts. The real and imaginary itineraries that inspired Goethe's poetry are explored. In this way, the reader is given access to Goethe's early poetry, as only a genuine poet from another cultural area can succeed.
