In the Middle of the Nineteenth Century in the royal court of Lucknow, a family of musicians emerged whose lineage would become prominent throughout North India. Today that musical tradition, known as the Lucknow gharana, lives on in the music and memories of a small handful of descendants and players of the sarod, an instrument invented generations ago by a family patriarch. Drawing on a decade of ethnographic and archival research, and eight years of musical apprenticeship under one of the last surviving heirs of the Lucknow gharana, Max Katz explores its oral history and written record, and in so doing unfolds a new and unsettling narrative of Hindustani music's encounter with modernity. Lineage of Loss illuminates a hidden history of ideological and social struggle in North Indian music. Katz's contribution to ongoing debates over the anti-Muslim agenda of India's music reform movement reanimates a lost vision in which Muslim scholar-artists defined the music of the nation.
