The First World War was indiscriminate in the lives it took and the lives it touched, whether civilian or soldier, man or woman. Both contemporary observers and postwar commentators have seen the gendered experiences of these men and women as especially significant to our understanding of the First World War and its consequences. Gender and the Great War enriches the literature on World War I and gender history with a global, thematic approach to how ideas of gender characterized this modern conflict.
