Biography/History:
Curate of Woodbridge from 1688 and headmaster of the Woodbridge Grammar School from 1689 to 1703, succeeding his father, also named Philip Candler, who served as headmaster there from 1670 to his death in 1689.
Summary:
Miscellany of original Latin epistles and poetry; a Latin poem by George Thomson published in the 17th century (De Cariclea, f. 63v-64r); collected classical Latin aphorisms (f. 68r-70v);genealogical notes on the Candler family of Suffolk (f. 1r-2r); and a poem by Gwinnett titled "On Queen Anne's knighting Dr. Hans and Mr. William Read the occulist," published 1705 (f. 65v-66r). The signature of the younger Philip Candler appears in the front of the book (f. 2r) and the initials P.C. in the hand of the younger Philip Candler have been added at the end of several of the epistles, which are in a different hand, perhaps that of the older Philip Candler (f. 10r, 12r, 15r). Many leaves have been torn out. The aphorisms and a few poems are written in from the back with the volume turned upside down.

Ms. codex.
Title supplied by cataloger.
Foliation: Modern foliation in pencil, 1-70 (29-62 blank), lower right recto.
Script: Beginning and end written in secretary script, possibly by the younger Philip Candler (f. 1r-2r, 63v-70v); Latin poems and epistles written earlier, possibly by other hands (f. 3r-28r).
Binding: Contemporary (17th-century) parchment over cardboard; very simply gilt-tooled.
Origin: Probably written in Woodbridge, Suffolk, in the second half of the 17th century and the very early 18th century; the latest dates in the manuscript are a genealogical note about a death in 1702 (f. 1r) and a copy of a poem dated 1705 (f. 66r).
