Summary:

More than 80% of youth under the age of 18 live with at least one sibling and multiple researchers have called for an increase in the examination of this important close relationship. The study of sibling relationships is expanding, however, and greater attention is being directed towards specific processes and mechanisms within the sibling relationship. Of particular interest to this issue is the way in which siblings navigate power, control, and influence in a relationship that is both complementary and reciprocal. Sibling relationships transform rather dramatically from hierarchical relationships in early and middle childhood, to egalitarian relationships by early adulthood. It is the goal of the contributors to this issue to examine the processes and consequences of such dynamic power shifts for our broader understanding of how these relationship dynamics change and develop throughout the life course, how such dynamics may be similar or different cross-culturally, and how they influence the quality of the sibling relationship, as well as the well-being of youth. To do so, we present research from each developmental period from early childhood through young adulthood, as well as cross-cultural research, in order to further our understanding of the developmental and contextual themes that may allow for drawing broader conclusions.
