Summary:
The United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to be achieved by (UNESCO, 2015) significantly included universal primary education (goal 2) and promoting gender quality and empowering women (goal 3), both essential to achieving goal 1, the eradication of extreme poverty and hanger. Effective early literacy instruction plays a critical role in achieving these goals. In this thematic issue, international programs from Africa (Ethiopia, Burundi, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Senegal), Asia (Bangladesh, Indonesia, Philippines), Latin America (Guatemala), and the Middle East (Egypt and Jordan) are presented. These programs attempt to implement evidence-based, culturally sensitive and cost-effective practices in reading instruction and intervention in the early grades. Its is the hope of all of the contributors to this issue that is not only will heighten awareness of the challenges faced but-also will provide valuable information to help guide and improve diverse global education programs and research, especially in developing regions and for children living in poverty or disadvantage in all nations, in the coming decades.
