- Biography/History:
- Brigantine Betsey was owned by Manuel Eyre, a Kensington shipbuilder and Captain John Denabre of Philadelphia. Betsey sailed for the West Indies with by Denabre as master and commander in March 1793 and was captured by Spain in August. A packet named La Infanta commanded by Mariano Merino intercepted Betsey and carried the vessel to La Coruña, Spain. Denabre pursued his claim in Madrid to receive payment for the stolen vessel for over two years. The claim was adjudicated in 1796.

- Small collection of documents comprising six leaves, dated 1796 pertaining the claims against the Spanish government following the capture of Brigantine Betsey, John Denabre, master in 1793. The documents list the amount of the ship, lost cargo, and expenses due, wages due, and interest to be paid by Spain to owners of the brigantine Betsey, Captain Denabre and Manuel Eyre. One leaf is receipt of payment is signed by Emanuel Eyre. A document unrelated to Brig Betsey concerns the capture of the Brig Polly commanded Captain Potter. The document is an account of sales of 100 pipes Fayal wine.
