Several recipes for pain include opium based formulas such as laudanum and syrup of poppies. Some formulas have been named, for instance, Brittish oil, Dover's powder, Godfrey's cordial, and Dr. Gregory's liniment, and Dr. Scudder's triplex pills. There are many recipes for bitters including Dodd's bitters, Stoughton bitters, Van Vleck bitters, and vegetable bitters A few toiletry formulas are included such as tooth powders, oils, and waters.
