Summary:
The Golden Cockerel and Other Writings offers the first English-language translation of an often overlooked novel from one of Mexico's most influential literary figures of the 20th century, Cervantes Prize-winner Juan Rulfo (1917-1986). Often misclassified as a film text, The Golden Cockerel is Rulfo's second novel, written shortly after Pedra Páramo (1955) and in a more traditional style than his other texts. Offering a new, exciting glimpse into the author's creative oeuvre, this short novel tells the tale of a penniless man who, by playing games of chance, suddenly rises to wealth only to lose it all in a vivid exploration of life in rural Mexico. The Golden Cockerel and Other Writings pairs Rulfo's short novel with fourteen additional texts never included in the groundbreaking anthology, The Plain in Flames (1953). This new collection-with many items appearing for the first time in English - provides an intriguing insight into Rulfo's enduing literary canon while placing The Golden Cockerel alongside the iconic Pedro Páramo and The Plain in Flames from one of the most esteemed writers of modern Latin American literature.
