- Summary:
- This is the manuscript of the first French dictionary of the Hebrew language, written by Jacob Cremieu; the manuscript was originally two volumes, of which the first survives. Cremieu states that the work took twenty years to create (introduction, f. 2r-v) and the work and manuscript were commissioned for the Bibliothéque Royale (today Bibliothèque nationale de France) by the Ministre de l' Instruction Publique, April 1838 (Narcisse-Achille de Salvandy, 1795-1856, serving Louis Philippe, King of the French). This volume contains words from א-כ (the second volume likely continued ל-ת); Hebrew words written at the left column, with adjacent transliterated words in the center column; the right column contains the definitions in French; each entry is variously numbered with a connecting root-word at the top; the end of the volume contains a expansive index (f. 183r-223r). Written in three columns, with horizontal and vertical bounding lines ruled in lead (dictionary); index in ruled in six columns. Written in a 19th century European square script, vocalized (Hebrew) and a 19th century cursive script (French portions). Bound in contemporary red calf with marbled endpapers; gilt lines and dentelles on board and spine; decorated tail and edges; "Jacob Cremiu" in gilt cartouche on front.
