Summary:
This is a volume of Psalms (Tehilim) printed in Frankfurt an der Oder, a town easternmost in Brandenburg, Germany, on the border of Poland on the Oder River. In the historical order of Hebrew printing in Frankfurt an der Oder, the 1596 Psalms is the first single-issue of the books of the Bible; the Tanakh was printed there in 1551 and re-released in 1595 by the brothers Johann and Friedrich Hartmann in both octavo and sextodecimo formats (Vinograd) and this volume follows those printings.
Notes:
The Hebrew imprint information is from the colophon.
Signatures in Arabic and Roman numerals: 1-17⁸.
Woodcut title page decoration.
Catchwords at the bottom of every verso page.
Typesetting identical to that of Tehilim in the edition of the complete Hebrew Bible published by the brothers in Frankfurt an der Oder in 1595. The t.p. border of Ketuvim is re-used, and on the last page of Tehilim, the catchword "Mishle" is taken out and replaced by the colophon -- BHB.
Printed in single column in a square font; all words vocalized and with Hebrew cantillation.
The volume ends with a note on the mispar ha-pesuḳim, or count of verses; printer information from the colophon.
Local Notes:
Penn Libraries copy in very fine condition; the edges are tinted blue, with stamps removed from the title and title verso. Bound in early blind-tooled white pigskin over boards, with paste-downs missing. Fragments of a Christian liturgical music manuscript are visible from the inner gutter edges inside the covers.
Penn Libraries copy bound with: Mishle Shelomoh / Iyov (books of Proverbs and Job), Frankfurt an der Oder: Johann and Friedrich Hartmann, 1595.
Acquired for the Penn Libraries with assistance from the Rare Judaica Acquisitions Fund.
