Biography/History:
Izraʼeliṭ (spelled Israelite in this manuscript; 1857-May 25, 1938), rabbi, preacher, writer, and poet in Chelsea, Massachusetts beginning at least 1911 (his letter printed in Ha-meʼasef, no. 17 (Jerusalem, 1911-12), p. 31b-32b); one of the first members of The Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada in Massachusetts; author of Teʻudat Yiśraʼel (Boston? 1915), and left many works in manuscript; died and buried in the Jewish cemetery in Everett, Massachusetts, 1938 (photo and epitaph text in Abramowitz, Chachmei Yisroel of New England (Worcester, Mass. : Nathan Stolnitz Archives, 1991), p. 42).
Summary:
This is a manuscript of religious poetry written by Izraʼeliṭ (Israelite) during his final years as a rabbi in Chelsea before his death. Poems include lyrics of gratitude by the author on his 57th birthday (29 Av 1932; f. 5r-9r), a poem on mortality to be engraved at the funerary chapel in Chelsea (f. 15r-17r); epitaphs and records of charity donations (f. 17v-18v); elegies (son Barukh Pinḥas died in 1933); poem for the hostilities in the Holy Land (Hebron Massacre; f. 37r-41r); poem condemning Adolf Hitler, "terrorizer of the Jews" (f. 75r-77r; author's retelling of a worker's strike against Hitler, 1935; f. 153r); poems and eulogies upon the death of Israel Meir ha-Kohen (Ḥafets Ḥayim, 1839-1933; f. 86r-98r); poem in honor of Maimonides (f. 133r-146r); on the death of Abraham Isaac Kook (f. 156r-164r) and Joseph Rosen (Rogachover Ga'on; f. 165r-171r). Written in an Ashkenazic cursive script typical of 20th century Lithuanian and Russian hands; accent words vocalized. Poems laid out in various columns and schemes; table of contents (f. 338v-340r); various ink and food stains across center folios.
