Summary:
"The Chief's Daughter is a story of a girl named Nyambura, who is born in central Kenya a few years before the country gets its independence from Britain. At the time of her birth, the Mau Mau uprising is just about to begin while white missionaries are on a Christianization mission. They face numerous hurdles from traditionalists. What's more, her father is a colonial chief, who is a detested figure in society for being a symbol of the wrong side in the struggle for independence. Nyambura's life turns topsy-turvy after the State of Emergency is declared. Like many other children, she is separated from her family, she misses school, faces starvation and her life becomes a rollercoaster whose destination is unknown. The events of her childhood live with her into adulthood, but she manages to prove equal to the many opposing forces in her life. This is a story of a girl's coming of age in a time of conflict and uncertainty."--back cover.
