Summary:
This book was prepared with the active collaboration of an Advisory Committee composed of Anne Anastasi, Richard C. Atkinson, Frank A. Beach (deceased), Kenneth E. Clark, R. J. Herrnstein, Ernest R. Hilgard, David E. Leary, Kenneth MacCorquodale (deceased), Roger W. Russell, Robert R. Sears, Richard F. Thompson, Leona E. Tyler, and Seymour Wapner. After the usual compilation of lists of names made up of past candidates for previous volumes, nominations from committee members, and lists of psychologists who had received major awards or honors, we went through a process of rating, ranking, and eventually inviting. The process was begun in June 1983, and the volume went to press in September 1988. As in the past, we had virtually no declinations but a significant number of delinquencies. In my biased judgment, this is the most interesting set of accounts that has yet appeared in the series. It includes several of the most gifted writers that psychology has (or has had); it includes our first joint autobiography; and although the contributors are less balanced in nationality and gender than we wished, our three women contributors exceed the number in any previous volume. The accounts given in this book are rich material for historians of psychology as well as fascinating reminiscences for those of us who have known and interacted with some or all of these distinguished psychologists.
