In the latter part of October, 1887, a favorable accident brought to the observation of the author, in the clinic for nervous diseases under his direction, a person extraordinarily suitable for the study of hypnotism. In so far as humane considerations and therapeutic judgment allowed, this opportunity, which occurs so infrequently, was liberally used in the interest of scientific investigation for the study of the questions of hypnotism. Significant and practically important facts for experimental and psychical therapeutics will, I am convinced, come from this source. account of this conviction I believed that, in the interest of the advancement of scientific knowledge concerning so many questions of practical, social, and legal importance in the domain of hypnotism, I should lay before a wider circle of medical readers the observations and proofs made by numerous colleagues and myself; and it is hoped that science and truth will be furthered by diverse and unprejudiced criticism. Moreover, my determination was influenced in no small degree by two facts which are clearly established by the following observations, and which, in any case, are important as aids to medical and forensic judgment, viz.: (1) that the phenomena of hypnotism are of a psychosuggestive nature; (2) that post-hypnotic suggestion leads to the establishment of auto-hypnosis.
