Summary:
As part of a larger set of works designed to record--in their chronological order--the steps by which psychology has reached its present stage of development, this volume examines the development of psychology during the mediaeval and early modern period. Part I focuses on the background of mediaeval thought, including the influence of theology, scholarship and tradition, progress of doctrines in the fifth and sixth centuries, and the Arabian teachers. Part II examines the groundwork and beginnings of mediaeval psychology, from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century. Part III covers the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, discussing the scientific basis, systematic thought and Descartes, and the expansion of psychology in the seventeenth century. Part IV focuses on the eighteenth century, and includes chapters on the British psychologists, continental empiricism, the beginning of German psychology, and the influence and applications of psychology from 1700-1800.
