Throughout the book, the author, Robert Lewis Dabney exhibits his shrewdness for logical reasoning. Dabney, theologian, architect, college professor, and Christian apologist [defender] was well-read in many areas. And, despite writing on a variety of other subjects, he considered his two books on philosophy to be his best contributions to academia. In this book, Dabney demonstrates how non-theistic philosophy, geology, and biology "reasons on the basis of unproven assumptions." Because of widespread acceptance of the secular ideas erupting in the 19th century, including the concepts of Charles Darwin's, "Origin of the Species," there began a movement in academia to capitulate to these ideas in order to maintain worldly respectability. Dabney's arguments in opposition to Darwin in this book are still relevant today. In fact, his chapters on Evolution are worth the price of the entire book. Dabney reminds us that The Word of God has encountered numerous academic challenges throughout history, and has always prevailed. He counsels that compromise will lead to more conciliations as new scientific theories come and go.
