Summary:
Recent advances in fiber optic technology, and the possibility of their use in civil structures has instigated the development of a number of research activities in the civil engineering community. This book is intended for rapid dissemination of current state of the art on this emerging technology. Fiber optic sensors, and smart structure technology have been successfully employed in space and aeronautics applications. With minimal research, these technologies can be applied to civil structures. Fiber optic sensors can help protect our infrastructure. This book contains information regarding 1) Techniques for measurement of strain, temperature, pressure and magnetic fields; 2) smart structure technology; 3) applications in fracture mechanics; and 4) embedment in concrete.
