- 전돌은 흔히 전벽돌 또는 벽돌이라고 불리기도 한다. 그러나 벽돌은 요즘의 블록과 같이 건물의 벽체를 쌓거나 보도용으로 주로 쓰이데 반해,전돌은 무덤이나 지상 건조물의 축조에 사용 되어 그 전통이나 쓰임새, 형태 면에서 약간씩 차이를 보인다. 이러한 전돌은 손쉽게 구성할 수 있는 흙을 재료로 하여 높은 온도로 구워 만들었기 때문에 내구력(耐久力)이 강하고 방화성(防火性)이나 방한성(防寒性)이 뛰어나다. 때문에 가공이 용이할 뿐 아니라 쉽게 바꿀 수 있는 가변성으로 인해 아치나 궁륭 천장과 같은 특정한 장소에도 사용할 수 있는 전통적 건축 용재이다. 전돌은 보통 자연 건조시킨 날전돌과 불에 구워낸 소성(燒成)전돌로 구분할 수 있는데, 가장오랜된 날전돌은 기원전 6000년경 메소포타미아지방에서 발견되었고 소성전돌은 이보다 훨씬 늦은 기원전 3000년경부터 보급되었다.이 책에서는 각 시기별로 변천해온 전돌의 모습과 종류, 그리고 지금 남아 있는 가마터를 중심으로 살펴보았다.
- Jeondol is also commonly called Jeonbrick or brick. However, while bricks, like blocks these days, are mainly used to build building walls or for sidewalks, bricks are used in the construction of tombs and above-ground buildings, showing some differences in terms of tradition, use, and form.
