- Summary:
- "Man's desire for freedom must be taken as a byproduct of his instinct for self-preservation, for certainly there is no more compelling force to be encountered. To get out of prison, the prisoner will endure everything, dare anything. There seems to be no limit to his capacity. It is observable also that there is, apparently, a breaking point in the lives of most men who are immured. When this point is reached the prisoner either gives up hope or tries to escape. The time cannot be charted. I have known men to break prison within six months of the end of their term. This book fills a very real gap in the literature on the subject. There is a small library on escapes and the escaper, but it deals in large part with the noncriminal. Here we have the convict of today, the men with whom our prisons are filled at this moment. To this study the author brought both expert knowledge and a deal of human understanding. He was wise enough to know the value of the modern scientific point of view on the criminal, and to this point of view he himself made notable contributions. The following chapters make no claim to literary distinction. They are a series of stories, thrillingly interesting, and of considerable criminological and penological significance"--Preface.
