Summary:

It is noted that the problems usually comprised under the name of philosophy are those dealing with the questions of profound human interest: What is man's place in the universe? and Is there any transcendental purpose inherent in the eternal drifting of matter and energy? It is argued that before the deeper relationships of existence and the universe can be discerned, the ultimate facts must the known. Principles can be tested by application to different branches of natural science. Scientific knowledge is reviewed in the first four chapters. The two final chapters present philosophical conclusions that emerge from this study. Chapter I deals with the material structure of the universe. Chapter II addresses the constitution of matter itself, and some of the main laws of matter and energy. Chapter III deals with life and consciousness. Chapter IV explores the relation of consciousness to the nervous system. Chapters V and VI describe the main principles of materialism, which appear to emerge from the preceding review of scientific conclusions.
