"The general and specific purposes of the present work have been discussed in detail in the general preface to the first volume, to which the reader is referred for a complete exposition of points of view and methods. The third volume, here offered, deals with two groups of problems, to the subject matters of which I have given the names: cerebration and action, respectively. The discussions of these respective subject matters comprise Parts V and VI of the work as a whole. Under the heading of Cerebration, I have considered the laws which relate experience or consciousness with the central nerve processes and structures. The most important of the latter are, of course, those of the cerebral cortex. Under the heading of Action, in Part VI, I have discussed the laws which associate consciousness with factors in the efferent sector of the response arc, including behavior, or the postures and movements of the organism."
