- "The completion of one hundred years of service by a national institution such as St. Elizabeths Hospital should not pass without notice; accordingly in 1954 steps were taken to insure a proper observance of the Centennial of the Hospital. A Scientific Program was arranged to precede by a day the meeting of the American Psychiatric Association at Atlantic City. Outstanding psychiatrists from the United States and abroad, including several alumni of St. Elizabeths Hospital, one of them the President of the American Psychiatric Association, were invited to participate and accepted. The scholarly papers which they presented constitute the present volume"--Preface.
