"The first part of the book is devoted almost entirely to constitutional and structural features which are basic to behavior. Following this account, attention is directed mainly toward the principles of modification. Emphasis is placed particularly upon the principle inherent in conditioned and redintegrative processes. This principle, often discussed only in connection with conditioned reflex experiments, is shown to be basic to all learning and to all acquisition, whether it be of the type belonging to the early modifications of infant behavior, or of the type familiar in the building up of complex mental, verbal, and perceptual functions. It is hoped that the inclusion of a large amount of experimental material will prove stimulating to the student and will serve to familiarize him with the technical requirements of laboratory procedure. The photographs of actual laboratory setups, appearing in several chapters, should also prove helpful. In the selection of experimental material the older standard experiments have not been ignored, but preference has been shown for more recent work in the field"--Preface.
